With the next Windows 10 updates, Microsoft will completely overhaul the Windows app icons. The technology company also announces that the previous start menu will also be revised in the future. We'll tell you exactly what's changing with the updates and how you can get the new features.

New app icons in Windows 10

Microsoft is changing its own app icons with the upcoming Windows updates. This applies to the Windows apps Mail, Calendar, your smartphone, Explorer, and OneDrive, among others.

The well-known Windows symbols were redesigned last year. The icons of the Office apps, such as Word or Excel, have been completely overhauled. After that, the icon for Microsoft's Edge web browser was changed.

The redesign of the well-known Windows symbols is part of the planned expansion of the Fluent design system - a design language in Microsoft programming. With the redesign, the Windows apps should differ much better from the other apps that do not come from Microsoft in terms of optics and thus be more visible.

How do I get Microsoft's new app icons?

Users of the Windows Insider program, in which new functions are tested first, can already enjoy the new icons. Since the test phase will end shortly, the new app icons will be implemented in the final version of Windows 10 and thus made available to all users of the Microsoft operating system.

To get the new app icons, you must have Windows 10 with the current version 1909. If you do not yet have the new version 1909, you can obtain it via the update assistant, which can be downloaded from Microsoft's homepage. After that, you will get the new icons for the Windows apps with the regular Windows updates.

It is not guaranteed that you will receive the new icons immediately after installing the updates since Microsoft usually delivers new functions to the end-user over time. However, there is the possibility, provided you have installed the latest Windows version with all current updates as described above, to get the new icons via the Microsoft Store.

Open the Microsoft Store, click on the 3 horizontal dots in the top right, select "Downloads and Updates" and then click "Get Updates". This means that all apps are updated if a newer version is available. With a bit of luck, you'll get the new symbols right away.

If that doesn't work either, you'll have to be patient and wait until you get them with one of the new Windows updates.

Windows 10 gets a new start menu

Windows users have been criticizing the Windows 10 start menu for some time. Therefore, the live tiles that appear on the desktop after clicking on the Windows symbol at the bottom left should disappear in the future and the start menu should be completely redesigned.

Since the live tiles have different colors, their display changes constantly and each icon also has its own color, the previous start menu looks chaotic and too colorful. For this reason, Microsoft will redesign the start menu so that it has a more uniform look.

The American technology company has now shown the public a prototype of the new Windows 10 Start menu. The live tiles are missing and the icons in the start menu are no longer colored but adapt to the screen background.

Microsoft announced that they do not want to completely remove live tiles from the operating system and will give users the option to activate them if necessary.

How to get the new start menu for windows 10?

As is so often the case, new functions for the Windows operating system come with regular Windows updates.

Impatient contemporaries can download the TileIconifier program. With this program, you can design and customize the tiles of the Windows 10 start menu according to your own preferences. So you could also design the Windows 10 start menu based on the future look and you can already look forward to the new start menu.
